LA Bulky Item Pickup vs. Hiring a Junk Removal Company in Los Angeles

If you live in the City of Los Angeles, bulky-item pickup is free: schedule it through 311 or MyLA311, set items at the curb, and LASAN collects them on your trash day. Hire a hauler when the items are inside, the date matters, or the load includes construction debris or dirt.

Key takeaways

  • LA City bulky pickup is free, and LASAN describes it as unlimited, but it is curbside only and scheduled in advance.
  • It excludes construction debris, dirt and hazardous materials, and crews do not enter your property.
  • Neighboring cities cap free pickups by count; the table shows each cap and flags what is unconfirmed.
  • Use the city for small, curbside, non-urgent loads; use a hauler for indoor, large, urgent or excluded loads.

How does LA's free bulky-item pickup work?

The City of Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment department (LASAN) collects bulky household items from residences at no charge. As of November 2026, the steps are these, from LASAN's wording and a third-party guide we have not been able to confirm on the official page:

  1. Request the pickup through 311, the MyLA311 app or website, or by calling (800) 773-2489. Do this before you put anything outside.
  2. Request it at least one business day ahead of your regular trash day.
  3. Place the items at the curb or alley spot where your bins go, by 7 a.m. on collection day or as your confirmation tells you.
  4. Crews collect them with the regular route.

The official instructions live on the LASAN scheduling page. The accepted list reportedly includes furniture, mattresses, carpet, fixtures, appliances and electronic waste, with e-waste scheduled as a separate request. LASAN also runs free monthly bulky-item drop-off events at district yards and the Central LA Recycling and Transfer Station, with furniture, carpet, yard trimmings, shelving and wood on the accepted list; check the schedule for dates, because they are Saturdays and they change.

What won't the city take?

The program is built for household furniture and appliances. According to the third-party guide, it does not take the following:

  • Construction and demolition debris: concrete, lumber, drywall, roofing and similar remodel material.
  • Dirt, soil and rock.
  • Auto parts, paint and chemicals. Household hazardous waste goes to a S.A.F.E. Center, such as the Hyperion site at 7660 W Imperial Hwy in Playa del Rey, which is open Saturdays and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We do not haul it either.
  • Commercial waste. The free program is for residences.
  • Anything inside the building. Crews work from the curb. They do not come upstairs, into the garage, or into a back yard.

This is why contractor leftovers and ADU debris almost always end up on a private truck. See our debris removal page for how we handle those.

When is the free program the right call?

Use it. A free program that works is a free program that works. Pick LASAN when the items are curbside-ready and you can wait for your trash day. A single mattress, a loveseat that two people can carry out, a broken bookcase, a dead dryer in the alley. If you have a week and a driveway, there is no reason to pay anyone.

A few tips from the truck side: schedule early, because a request that misses the cutoff slips a week. Put the items where the truck can see them and do not block the bins. Take a photo of the pile at the curb in case the item is missed, so that you can show 311 what you set out. And if rain is forecast, cover the upholstered items or hold them back; wet couches are heavier and are the ones that get left behind.

When does hiring a hauler make more sense?

There are five situations where we see people stop trying to make the city program fit:

  • The items are inside. An upstairs bedroom set, a basement, a garage full of boxes. Someone has to move it to the curb, and that someone is usually you.
  • The date is fixed. A lease ending Friday or an escrow closing Tuesday does not wait for trash day.
  • The load is large. A full apartment is a lot of curb. Neighbors, parking enforcement and the building manager all have views about a pile that size.
  • The material is excluded. Remodel debris and dirt need a hauler and a facility that accepts them.
  • You cannot be there. Estate cleanouts and landlord turnovers are often managed from out of town.

What does every city in our area offer for free?

Free programs differ sharply from one city to the next, and the address matters more than the ZIP. The table summarizes what each jurisdiction lists as of November 2026, from the city and hauler pages we checked. Where the city has not confirmed a rule or sources conflict, we say so. Verify with your hauler before you set anything out.

The pattern: LA City is uncapped, the incorporated cities cap by count, and several cities exclude construction debris and anything on private property. If your address straddles a boundary, as parts of Palms, Beverlywood and Playa Vista do, check which jurisdiction actually serves you before you call.

What about the neighborhoods where we work?

In Venice, the city program is real, but walk streets and canal lots make curb placement awkward, which we cover in our beach city access guide. In Culver City, the city's appointment wait is about two weeks and its allowance is lower than LA's, so a hauler wins on speed. In Mar Vista and Palms, walk-up buildings mean stairs that the city crew will not climb. Most of the calls we get are not about the price of the pickup. They are about the 40 feet between the item and the curb.

Not sure which side of a boundary you are on? Text the address to (310) 905-5138 and we will tell you who serves it.

Questions on this topic

Is bulky item pickup really free in Los Angeles?

Yes, for residents of the City of Los Angeles. LASAN lists free curbside pickup for household bulky items. You schedule it first through 311 or MyLA311, and it is collected on your regular trash day.

How many items can I put out for LA bulky item pickup?

As of November 2026, LASAN's wording describes the service as unlimited for residents, though some third-party sites cite a yearly cap, so confirm with 311. Crews will not take construction debris or dirt, and the pile has to be at the curb. If your pile is large, say so when you schedule.

Will LA sanitation workers come inside to get my furniture?

No. Crews collect from the curb or alley location where your bins go. Items inside a home, garage, back yard or upper floor have to be moved out by you or by a hauler.

What can't the city take that a junk hauler can?

Remodel and construction debris, dirt, and loads that are inside a building. A hauler also takes the jobs that have a deadline. Hazardous waste is outside what we or the city bulky program handle; take it to a S.A.F.E. Center.

Do other cities near Los Angeles offer free bulky pickup?

Most do, with caps. Santa Monica allows 3 a year, Culver City 1 or 2, El Segundo 4, Torrance 1 and Rancho Palos Verdes 3. Check the table above, and verify the entries marked as unconfirmed with your hauler.
