What we pick up most on the Palos Verdes Peninsula

This is a homeowners' peninsula. Rancho Palos Verdes is about 80 percent owner-occupied across 16,497 housing units, Palos Verdes Estates is 87 percent owners, and Rolling Hills Estates is nearly 90 percent. The work follows from that: estate cleanouts after a long tenure, hillside green waste, remodel debris, and the quiet clearing-out that comes with a sale. In Palos Verdes Estates, where covenants reserved half the land for common use and most of the rest for single-family homes, you see the full range from Malaga Cove and Lunada Bay to Valmonte and Montemalaga.

Rolling Hills Estates has its own character: horse paths, paddocks and barns. Stable and equestrian-property cleanouts mean old tack rooms, rotted stall panels, fencing, feed bins and decades of what accumulates in a barn. And across the peninsula, the Portuguese Bend landslide, an area of about 260 acres, has created a category of work most Westside neighborhoods never see: cleanouts and relocations for homes in Portuguese Bend and Seaview affected by ground movement. Gas was shut off to 135 homes and power to 245 in 2024, a FEMA grant of more than $23 million has been awarded, and the Wayfarers Chapel was closed that year to be dismantled and relocated.

Getting the truck in

Hillside and bluff lots mean long, steep driveways, sharp turns and sometimes gates. We ask for the driveway length and slope in your photos, and we plan truck size around it. Palos Verdes Drive South crosses the Portuguese Bend slide zone, where the road is subject to ongoing movement; if a job is down there, we confirm the route the day before. In Palos Verdes Estates the Art Jury governs design and remodels, and visible staging in front of a home can draw attention. We load discreetly and keep the pile off the street.

Equestrian properties in Rolling Hills Estates have their own geometry. Barns sit far from the road, paddock gates are narrow, and we avoid driving over horse paths. We carry by hand where needed, and we ask you to confirm where animals will be during the pickup.

Peninsula pickup programs vs. hiring us

The peninsula has four haulers across three cities. In Rancho Palos Verdes, EDCO, the exclusive franchise for roughly 95 percent of the city, gives up to three free bulky collections a year of up to four items each; you call (310) 540-2977 before setting items out. Universal Waste Systems, at (800) 631-7016, serves Palos Verdes Drive South and Portuguese Bend. Palos Verdes Estates has no general on-call bulky program that we could find. Athens, at (888) 336-6100, runs an annual Saturday curbside bulky and e-waste event, listed for May 16, 2026, with September 19, 2026 also listed, with items out by 6 a.m. Rolling Hills Estates residents get four free WM pickups a year of up to five items each, at (800) 774-0222.

Those programs are real and worth using for a few items. What they don't do is clear a barn, empty a house, haul a remodel or take brush and construction material; the Palos Verdes Estates event excludes construction and green waste. Between annual events there is a gap, and that's our work.

Yard debris, brush clearance and fire season

The peninsula's slopes are covered in brush, and the city of Rancho Palos Verdes runs brush-clearing days in spring and fall. Between those days, trimming and clearing pile up faster than a curbside program can take them. We haul green waste, cut branches, dead shrubs and the debris from clearance work, and we can do it in one pass with a general cleanout. Check the city's current brush-clearance requirements and dates yourself, since they change; we haul what you or your gardener cut. See our yard debris removal in Palos Verdes page for the details.

Hazardous materials such as paint, pool chemicals, fuel and auto fluids are not something we take, and neither are fire ash or burned-structure debris.

Where Palos Verdes junk ends up

The nearest facilities are the WM Carson Transfer Station at 321 W Francisco St in Carson and, in Gardena, Waste Resources Recovery at 357 W Compton Blvd and the Republic Services and American Waste station at 1449 W Rosecrans Ave. Metal goes to a scrap recycler, green waste to a processor where possible, mattresses into the state recycling program and electronics to a certified handler.

The peninsula is about 45 minutes from Santa Monica off-peak, and the route down is part of why we batch jobs.

Seasons on the peninsula

Spring is for estate cleanouts and the city brush days. Late summer is listing season. Winter is about slopes. NOAA's October 15, 2026 outlook favors wetter-than-average conditions across Southern California from December through February, and the Portuguese Bend slide zone and the Peartree Lane area in Rolling Hills Estates, where a July 8, 2023 landslide destroyed several homes, are the kind of places where rain concerns are real. We are preparing for the forecast El Niño with pre-storm cleanups of fallen limbs and yard debris, and we haul after storms. The county puts debris on private property on the owner.

A typical Palos Verdes call

A sketch of a typical Rolling Hills Estates call, until a real one replaces it: a family in Rolling Hills Estates is selling a house after forty years. The barn behind it holds old stall panels, tack, a broken wheelbarrow and a loft of lumber. They text photos at 8 a.m. Miles replies with a price based on a full truck and a note about the long haul. The crew arrives the next morning, hand-carries from the paddock, drops usable tack and tools at a donation center, takes metal to scrap and finishes with a swept barn floor.

Palos Verdes questions

How much free bulky pickup do Rancho Palos Verdes residents get?

If it still has life, it goes to charity, not the landfill. Call (310) 540-2977 before setting items out. Palos Verdes Drive South and Portuguese Bend are served by Universal Waste Systems at (800) 631-7016.

Does Palos Verdes Estates have on-call bulky pickup?

We found only an annual Saturday curbside bulky and e-waste event run through Athens, listed for May 16, 2026 and September 19, 2026, with items out by 6 a.m. Construction waste and green waste are excluded. We cover everything between events.

Can you clear a barn or stable in Rolling Hills Estates?

Yes. Barn, stable and equestrian-property cleanouts are a regular job. We hand-carry from paddocks and avoid horse paths, and we ask where animals will be during the pickup. WM's program there allows 4 pickups a year of up to 5 items, which won't cover a barn.

Do you work in the Portuguese Bend landslide area?

Yes, with route planning. Palos Verdes Drive South crosses an area of ongoing ground movement, so we confirm access the day before. We handle cleanouts and relocations for homes in Portuguese Bend and Seaview.

Do you haul brush and yard waste from hillside properties?

Yes. We take cut brush, branches, shrubs and green waste, including debris from clearance work. Check your city's brush-clearance rules and dates directly. Rancho Palos Verdes has run spring and fall brush-clearing days.

Why is the Palos Verdes price different from the Westside?

Distance. The peninsula is roughly 45 minutes from Santa Monica off-peak, so we batch jobs and build the haul into the quote. Pricing is still by truck space from your photos, and Miles confirms a clear price by text.
