What we pick up most in Malibu
About 70 percent of Malibu homes are owner-occupied, which tilts our calls toward whole-property jobs rather than one-couch pickups. Right now the biggest category is rebuild-phase waste: scrap lumber, drywall offcuts, packaging and old fixtures from lots in Big Rock, Las Flores, La Costa and Carbon Beach. The Palisades Fire took nearly all of the beachfront homes in the city's east, from Topanga to Duke's, and Big Rock received Malibu's first post-fire certificate of occupancy in June 2026. The city had issued its 100th rebuild permit by then, with 41 homes in construction, so contractors there are generating waste every week. Those figures are a snapshot from mid-2026 reporting, and the pace keeps changing.
The rest of the mix is classic Malibu. Hillside and canyon estates on large lots send us estate cleanouts, garages that have not been opened since the last remodel, and brush and trimmings from clearing around the house. Beach houses in Carbon Beach and Malibu Colony swap furniture between owners and renters, and some of those pieces are too good for a landfill.
Getting the truck in
PCH is the whole story. Through the burn zone it runs at reduced capacity with a 25 mph limit, and we plan roughly 25 minutes from our Santa Monica yard to Carbon Beach, 30 to the Civic Center and Cross Creek, and 40 to Point Dume. Those are off-peak planning estimates, so add time on a weekend or when a lane is closed. We pick your window with that in mind rather than promising a time PCH will not honor.
Once we are there, the lot decides everything:
- Malibu Colony: gated, on small lots. Send the gate code or arrange a guard call, and tell us where the truck can stand without blocking the street.
- Beachfront homes: we load from the PCH shoulder or from a private road, whichever is legal and safe. A carry through the house is included in the quote.
- Hillside and canyon lots: long driveways, limited turnaround and, often, a septic system. We stage the truck where it can turn, hand-carry down the slope, and keep wheels off the leach field if you point it out.
Malibu's bulky-item day vs. hiring us
Malibu is split between two haulers at John Tyler Road. Universal Waste Systems serves the east side, the Malibu Garbage Disposal District that includes Malibu Road, and can be reached at (800) 631-7016. WM serves the west side at (800) 675-1171. The city lists one free bulky-item collection day per year for residents, and county sources describe a different allowance for the Malibu Garbage Disposal District, so ask your hauler which applies to your address. You book the day by calling your hauler with an itemized list by noon the Friday before, and containers may go out no earlier than 5:30 p.m. the day before. Accepted items include furniture, appliances, carpet, mattresses, electronics and refrigerators.
If you have a single old sofa and can wait for the date, use it. It is a fair program. It does not help when the move-out is next week, when the pile is an entire house, or when the material is rebuild debris, which is not household bulky waste. Many Malibu properties also sit hundreds of feet from a curb that a collection truck would use. We come to the garage, the deck or the back lot.
Where Malibu junk ends up
Malibu is in the Calabasas Landfill wasteshed, on Lost Hills Road in Agoura Hills. We do not assume its public self-haul rules; the city lists them as unconfirmed, so we check before any load is routed there. The nearest Westside transfer station is Southern California Disposal and Recycling at 1908 Frank Street in Santa Monica, which is also where our trucks base out of, so many Malibu loads finish close to home.
Before disposal, we pull what has a second life. Metal goes to scrap, mattresses to the state recycling program, electronics to a certified e-waste handler. Organics recycling has been mandatory in Malibu since 2022, so we keep green waste separate from the rest.
What we leave behind: paint, solvents, fuel, propane and similar household hazardous materials. Hazardous ash and burned-structure debris from the fires were handled by government programs, and we do not take them. Our work is rebuild-phase waste, storm debris and household junk.
Seasons in Malibu
Spring and early summer are rebuild-heavy: framing goes up, and so do the piles of offcuts. Summer is turnover season for beach rentals. Fall is when people clear brush and empty storage before the rain.
This winter is different. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center has an El Niño Advisory in effect and, in its October 8, 2026 update, gave a greater than 83 percent chance of a strong-to-very-strong event through January to March 2027. NOAA's winter outlook favors wetter-than-average conditions for Southern California from December through February. Burn scars stay at elevated debris-flow risk for at least two years, the National Weather Service says, which makes this the highest-risk winter for both the Palisades and Franklin fire areas. The Franklin Fire burned in Malibu in December 2024. We are preparing for it by keeping crews open for storm calls. Los Angeles County states that debris on private property is the property owner's responsibility, so if branches, fencing or mud-soaked contents end up on your lot, text a photo and we will schedule the haul.
A typical Malibu call
A general contractor working a Big Rock rebuild texts a photo of a stack of cut lumber, drywall scrap and empty crates beside a half-framed house. Miles prices it by the truck space the pile fills. We arrive in the agreed window with two people, hand-carry from the lot to the truck, and send a photo of the clear site. The usable scrap lumber is offered to the crew first. This is the kind of job we will document with real photos once we have one to show.

Malibu questions
Do you serve all of Malibu, including Point Dume and Malibu Colony?
Yes, ZIPs 90265 and 90263 from Big Rock to Point Dume. PCH is operating at reduced capacity with a 25 mph limit through the burn zone, so we give you an arrival window that accounts for the drive. Gated areas like Malibu Colony need a gate code or guard approval ahead of time.
Does Malibu have a free bulky-item pickup?
The city lists one free bulky-item collection day per year per resident, booked through your hauler by noon the Friday before; county sources describe a different allowance for the Malibu Garbage Disposal District, so confirm with your hauler. Universal Waste Systems serves the east of John Tyler Road and WM the west. The day does not cover rebuild debris or pickups from inside the property.
Can you haul rebuild debris from a Malibu fire-rebuild site?
Yes: scrap lumber, drywall, packaging and old fixtures. Hazardous ash and burned-structure debris were cleared by government programs, so those are not on our truck.
How long does it take to get to Malibu from your Santa Monica base?
We plan about 25 minutes to Carbon Beach, 30 to the Civic Center and Cross Creek, and 40 to Point Dume. Those are off-peak estimates and PCH delays can add more, so we confirm a window after you text photos.
Where does Malibu junk go after pickup?
What is left goes to whichever transfer station or landfill suits the route. The Calabasas Landfill is in the Malibu wasteshed, but we confirm its self-haul rules before using it.
Are you preparing for El Niño storm debris in Malibu?
We are preparing for it. NOAA's October 8, 2026 update gave a greater than 83 percent chance of a strong-to-very-strong El Niño through early 2027, and burn scars stay at elevated debris-flow risk for at least two years. If storm debris ends up on your private property, text a photo.
