What we pick up most in Torrance, Lawndale and Lomita

Torrance is a suburb of 147,000 people spread over 20.5 square miles, with 54 percent of households owning and 46 percent renting. The common call is the one a suburban driveway produces: a two-car garage full of boxes, a back bedroom of furniture, a parent's house in West Torrance or Walteria being cleared before a sale. Old Torrance, with its Olmsted Brothers plan and Irving Gill homes, gets estate cleanouts and careful remodel debris. The average home was around $1.16 million in September 2025, so cleanouts often come before listings.

Lawndale, just north, is about two-thirds renters and a former postwar bedroom community with many absentee landlords. That means turnovers: a unit emptied between tenants, a small-lot garage no one has opened in years. Lomita is a little over half renters, on small lots with a few semi-rural parcels left, and its work is a mix of rental turnovers, yard cleanouts and small-business jobs along PCH and Narbonne Avenue. Retail is the other thread. Del Amo Fashion Center, at roughly 2.5 million square feet, generates tenant fixture and display removal that no residential program touches.

Getting the truck in

Most of Torrance is driveway single-family, which is easy: the truck sits at the curb or in the driveway and the crew carries from the garage. The harder access is on the Hollywood Riviera side, where hillside streets are narrow and we plan the parking before arrival. Lawndale and Lomita have small lots with alley or street parking; tell us whether the items are in a back unit or behind a gate. At Del Amo, we work to the mall's loading-dock rules and off-hours windows, and we send a certificate of insurance ahead.

Photos help most with garages. Send a wide shot from the door and one from the back wall so we can judge depth, since Torrance garages are often packed to the rafters.

Torrance's Large Item Pick Up vs. hiring us

The City of Torrance gives trash customers one free Large Item Pick Up per address per calendar year, up to 20 items, on your regular refuse day. You book it at (855) 354-5623, Monday through Friday. Mattresses are accepted. Extra pickups cost a fee, and items must be where city crews can reach them, not inside the garage. The program excludes construction debris such as wood, concrete, drywall, carpet and dirt, plus water heaters, auto parts, tires, hazardous waste and e-waste, and items two people can't handle, such as spas and pianos. Reports say townhome residents are sometimes told they are ineligible, which the city's official page doesn't mention.

For one big annual purge of the curb, it's a good program. It stops when you need to clear a whole house, when the stuff is inside, when you've used the year's pickup already, or when anything on that exclusion list is involved. The city also pauses the pickup during Christmas tree recycling. Lawndale's Republic Services program gives cart customers six free pickups a year of up to six items, and Lawndale's municipal code 8.28.140 bars leaving bulky items on public property without arranging a pickup. In Lomita, Athens arranges bulky pickups on request, and multifamily properties get one free on-call pickup a year of up to six items; the single-family allowance is not published.

Where Torrance junk ends up

Torrance tells residents they can self-haul at a discount, with proof of address, to Republic-owned transfer stations. That points to Republic and American Waste at 1449 W Rosecrans Ave and Waste Resources Recovery at 357 W Compton Blvd, both in Gardena, and the city also lists the WM Carson Transfer Station at 321 W Francisco St and SA Recycling in Gardena for metal and appliances. We use the same Gardena and Carson corridor, so a Torrance pickup is a short trip to unload.

If you have a truck and a weekend, self-hauling at the discounted rate is a legitimate option for a small load. We are for the loads that need a crew, a larger truck or a short deadline.

Seasons in Torrance

Rental turnover tracks the calendar in Lawndale and Lomita, with spikes at month-end and in late summer. Torrance's garage season runs from spring through fall, and estate cleanouts follow real estate listings. Winter is a wet-weather question. Los Angeles County's September 23, 2026 emergency proclamation and NOAA's October 15 outlook, which leans wetter than average from December through February, are the reasons to clear a garage floor before the first storm. Torrance is not a burn-scar area, but heavy rain still brings down limbs and soaks furniture stored in garages. The county puts private-property debris on the owner, which is where we come in.

A typical Torrance call

A sketch of a typical call, until a real one replaces it: someone in West Torrance has used up the city's yearly pickup in March and now has a garage of shelving, a sectional, a treadmill and thirty boxes. They send three photos at noon. Miles replies with a price for a three-quarter truck. The crew arrives the next morning, hand-carries from the garage to the driveway, drops the sectional at Goodwill, takes the treadmill to metal recycling and sweeps the floor before texting a final photo.

Torrance questions

How does Torrance's Large Item Pick Up work?

City trash customers get one free on-call pickup per address per calendar year, up to 20 items, on the regular refuse day. Book at (855) 354-5623. Construction debris, water heaters, spas, pianos and e-waste are excluded, and items must be out where crews can reach them.

What if I already used my free Torrance pickup this year?

Call us. Torrance charges a fee for extra pickups and doesn't collect from inside a garage or yard. We quote from photos and haul from wherever the items sit.

Do you serve Lawndale and Lomita as well as Torrance?

Yes. We cover Lawndale (90260) and Lomita (90717) along with Torrance's 90501 through 90505 ZIPs. Each city has its own hauler and allowance, which we explain when we quote.

Can I self-haul to a transfer station in Torrance instead?

Torrance says residents can self-haul at a discount with proof of address to Republic-owned stations in Gardena, plus WM Carson and SA Recycling for metal and appliances. Confirm hours and fees with the facility first. We are the option when you need a crew or a bigger truck.

Do you handle retail fixture removal at Del Amo Fashion Center?

Yes. We work to the mall's loading-dock and after-hours rules and send a certificate of insurance ahead. Shelving, display cases and tenant leftovers are routine.

Are townhomes eligible for Torrance's free pickup?

Townhome residents are reportedly told they are ineligible, but the city's official page doesn't say so. Ask the city at (855) 354-5623. Either way, we can haul a townhome cleanout and quote it from photos.
