What we pick up most in the Palisades

The Palisades is a rebuild zone. The Palisades Fire began on January 7, 2025, north of Bienvenida Avenue, and destroyed 6,831 structures fire-wide. Fire ash and burned-structure debris were removed by federal, state and county programs, and we do not handle either one. Our work starts after the cleanup phases are signed off, when lots are cleared and owners are building again.

That work is mostly contractor overflow, old and new: offcuts of lumber, packaging, cut-out drywall, spent concrete forms and the odd load a subcontractor does not want in his own truck. We also take landscape and hardscape debris from regrading, broken pavers, dead planters and removed fencing. These are jobs that pile up fast on a lot with a K-rail and no room for a bin.

Not every home burned. On the Alphabet Streets, in Marquez Knolls and around Rustic Canyon, plenty of houses stood but sat in smoke for weeks. Owners are clearing furniture, mattresses, rugs and closets of damaged contents, or moving into and out of temporary housing. We pick up the contents of standing homes, but we do not haul hazardous material of any kind.

Getting the truck in

Access here changes street by street. On the burn-zone streets, K-rail lines the curb and construction traffic is heavy. We schedule around the contractor's delivery windows and ask for a photo of the street and the pile. Castellammare and the upper hillside streets are steep, with tight switchbacks, so we use a smaller truck and carry down from the house when needed.

Palisades Highlands is gated. Send us the code or a contact for the window. Down on the Alphabet Streets and in Huntington Palisades the streets are ordinary and driveways are workable, though alleyless lots mean street parking matters. The approach to the Palisades runs along PCH and Chautauqua or Sunset, so we add a margin in the morning and evening.

The city program vs. hiring us

Pacific Palisades is part of the City of Los Angeles, so residents can schedule free curbside bulky-item pickup with LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) through 311 or MyLA311, at least one business day ahead of the regular trash day. The number is (800) 773-2489. For a couch or a mattress left at the curb, use it.

It will not cover most of what a rebuild produces. Third-party guides report LASAN does not take construction or renovation debris such as lumber, drywall or roofing, or dirt. Confirm on the LASAN page or 311. City crews also do not pull items from behind a construction fence or a steep driveway. Those loads belong to a licensed hauler, and that is the work we take.

Where Palisades debris ends up

Loads travel to Southern California Disposal & Recycling at 1908 Frank Street in Santa Monica, the nearest transfer station, and the short route keeps return trips quick.

Hazardous waste is outside our scope. Paint, solvents, fuel and chemicals go to a household hazardous waste site such as the West LA S.A.F.E. Center at UCLA. Fire ash and ash-contaminated debris are not ours to haul.

Seasons in the Palisades

Winter here is not a normal winter. Forecasters are tracking an El Niño this winter: NOAA's Climate Prediction Center has an El Niño Advisory in effect and gave a greater than 83% chance of a strong-to-very-strong event through January to March 2027, and NOAA's winter outlook favors wetter-than-average conditions across Southern California from December through February. The National Weather Service says burn scars stay at elevated debris-flow risk for at least two years, which puts the Palisades in its highest-risk winter. USGS modeling, as reported by the county, gives a 60 to 80 percent chance of debris flows in Palisades-area canyons in a design storm.

That is forecast, not a guarantee. The National Weather Service cautions that El Niño shifts the odds and does not set the outcome. As of early November, the city reports more than 13,000 feet of K-rail still in the Palisades and has said it is monitoring about 250 high-risk grading sites. In February 2025, a surviving Palisades home took on about three feet of mud in a storm. If you are preparing for the season, we can clear slopes, drains and yards of loose debris ahead of time. Sandbags are free at LAFD neighborhood fire stations. After a storm, mud and debris on private property are the owner's responsibility, and we can help with the cleanup of non-hazardous storm debris.

A typical Palisades call

What follows is a typical rebuild-lot call, written as a sketch until we have photos of a real one. A homeowner on one of the Alphabet Streets is rebuilding. The contractor has finished framing and left offcuts, cardboard and old fencing along the side yard. She texts three photos, and Miles confirms a price for a full truck. The crew arrives after the framers leave, loads by hand around the K-rail, sorts clean metal for recycling and drives the rest to Frank Street.

Pacific Palisades questions

Do you remove fire ash or burned-structure debris in Pacific Palisades?

No. Government programs handled hazardous ash and burned-structure debris after the January 2025 Palisades Fire. We haul rebuild-phase waste, storm debris and household junk after those cleanup phases are done.

Can you haul construction waste from a Palisades rebuild site?

Yes. We take contractor overflow, offcuts, cut-out drywall, old fencing and landscape or hardscape debris. We do not do demolition or heavy-equipment mud removal. Send photos and Miles will quote by truck space.

Does Los Angeles's free bulky pickup cover Palisades rebuild debris?

Usually not. LASAN's curbside program handles furniture and appliances; third-party guides report it excludes construction debris and dirt. Call 311 or (800) 773-2489 to confirm, and text us for anything the city will not take.

Can you get to steep streets in Castellammare or the Highlands?

Yes. We use a smaller truck on switchback streets and carry down from the house. Palisades Highlands is gated, so send the gate code or a contact for the window.

How are you preparing for El Niño in the Palisades?

We are preparing for storm season, not predicting damage. NOAA forecasts elevated odds of a wet winter and the National Weather Service lists burn scars as high risk. We help clear loose debris from slopes and yards ahead of storms.

Who pays for mud and debris on a Palisades property after a storm?

The county says clearing debris from private property falls to the owner, so mud and branches on your lot are yours to move. We can haul non-hazardous mud-soaked contents, branches and loose debris after a storm. Text us a photo.

Do you take smoke-damaged furniture from standing Palisades homes?

Yes. We haul smoke-damaged sofas, mattresses, rugs and clothing from homes that survived.

How fast can you get to Pacific Palisades from Santa Monica?

About 15 minutes outside rush hour via PCH and Chautauqua or Sunset. Text photos before noon to (310) 905-5138 for a possible same-day window.
