What furniture removal looks like on the Westside
Most of our furniture calls come from apartments. Nearly three in four Santa Monica households rent, Palms is about 92 percent renters, and the Marina and Wilshire Corridor are towers. That means sectionals that came in through a window and won't go out the door, mattresses that have to ride the elevator during the building's booked window, and the Tuesday-before-move-out pile of a futon, two nightstands and a bookshelf that the new place doesn't have room for.
The other half is houses. North of Montana, Brentwood and Beverly Hills send us dining sets, armoires and patio furniture when a house is staged for sale or an estate is being cleared. Manhattan Beach and Hermosa send beach-rental turnovers: bunk beds, outdoor sectionals, the stained futon. Different furniture, same process.
How a furniture pickup works
Text photos of each piece to (310) 905-5138 with your address and the floor it's on. Miles replies with one number based on how much truck space the pieces take, which already includes the carry, the stairs and the disposal or donation routing. Say yes and you get a two-hour window, same day if you text before noon.
Two people come with dollies, moving blankets and door-frame guards. Sectionals get split at the connectors, bed frames get unbolted, and sleeper sofas get the mechanism locked before they move. We don't need you to disassemble anything, but if you've already taken a bed frame apart, bundle the hardware and we'll keep it with the frame for the donation center. Most single-item pickups take 15 to 30 minutes door to door; a full apartment of furniture takes about an hour.
Load sizes for furniture
| Load | Typical furniture |
|---|---|
| Small load | A couch, a mattress and box spring, or a dresser |
| Quarter truck | A bedroom set, or a sofa plus a coffee table and two chairs |
| Half truck | A one-bedroom apartment's worth: couch, bed, dresser, table and chairs, bookshelf |
| Three-quarter truck | Two bedrooms plus living and dining rooms |
| Full truck | A whole house or a furnished rental turnover |
Furniture is light for its size, so it's almost always priced by space rather than weight. The exceptions are solid-wood pieces in quantity and anything with stone tops, which we'll call out in the quote.
Where the furniture goes
Donation first. A couch without rips, a dresser with all its drawers, a dining set or a headboard goes to Goodwill Southern California or The Salvation Army. If you'd rather a different charity, name it when you book and we'll check that it takes furniture by drop-off.
Mattresses and box springs never go to the landfill from our truck. California's mattress recycling program, funded by the fee you paid at purchase, takes them apart for steel, foam and wood. Metal bed frames and patio furniture go to a scrap recycler. Particleboard furniture that falls apart when moved, water-damaged pieces and anything with bedbugs is bagged and goes to a licensed transfer station, usually Southern California Disposal on Frank Street in Santa Monica or Culver City's station on Jefferson Boulevard.
Access situations we plan for
- Walk-ups: third-floor dingbat apartments in Palms and Mar Vista are routine. Tell us the floor and we send the right crew.
- Towers: Marina del Rey, Playa Vista and Wilshire Corridor buildings usually require an elevator reservation, protective pads and a certificate of insurance. We'll send the COI to your building the day before and schedule the window to match the dock hours.
- Walk streets and alleys: Venice's canal lots, Manhattan Beach's Sand Section and Hermosa's walk streets are carry-only for the last stretch. We park at the nearest legal spot and carry; the carry is in the quote.
- Hillside driveways: Bel Air, Beverly Crest and Topanga driveways can be too steep or narrow for the truck. We stage at the street and use dollies.
- Gated communities: leave the gate code or call the box when we text 20 minutes out.
When the city will take it for free, and when it won't
If you're in the City of Los Angeles (Venice, Mar Vista, West LA, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Westchester, Playa del Rey, Bel Air and the rest of the LA City neighborhoods), LA Sanitation picks up bulky furniture at the curb for free through 311 or MyLA311. You schedule ahead, put it out on your regular trash day, and it goes. That is the right call for a single couch when you have a few days and a curb to put it on.
It stops working when you don't have a curb (towers, walk streets), when the building's rules don't allow furniture at the street, when you need it gone today, or when the pile is more than a couple of pieces. Incorporated cities are tighter. Santa Monica's five items per pickup are gone after a bed frame, a mattress, a box spring, a dresser and a nightstand; Beverly Hills schedules on request; and third-party listings put Manhattan Beach's per-item limit near 150 pounds, which a sleeper sofa can exceed. A full move-out blows past every one of those.
Move-out season
Furniture piles up on the last weekend of the month and again when the quarter turns over around Westwood and Sawtelle. If your move-out date is fixed, book a week ahead and we'll hold the window. Landlords and property managers handling several units can send photos of each unit in one text thread and we'll quote them together.
Furniture Removal questions
Do you take mattresses with furniture pickups in Los Angeles?
Yes. Mattresses and box springs ride with any furniture load and go into California's mattress recycling program rather than a landfill. Mattresses are priced by the truck space they take, like everything else.
Can you get a couch out of a third-floor apartment?
Yes. Walk-ups are routine on the Westside. Tell us the floor when you text so we send two people with the right dollies; stairs are already in the price.
Will my furniture be donated?
If it's usable, yes. Pieces without rips, stains or broken frames go to Goodwill Southern California or The Salvation Army. Whether a charity accepts a specific piece is its call, so we judge condition from your photos first.
How much notice do you need for furniture removal?
Same day is usually possible if you text before noon. For a fixed move-out date, a week ahead holds the window you want.
Do I need to disassemble the bed or the sectional?
No. We split sectionals, unbolt bed frames and lock sleeper mechanisms on site. If you've already taken something apart, bag the hardware and we'll keep it with the piece.
Can you remove furniture from a condo tower in Marina del Rey or Westwood?
Yes. We work with your building manager to reserve the elevator, bring pads, and send a certificate of insurance to management the day before. Tell us the dock hours and we'll schedule inside them.
What's the difference between using LA's free bulky pickup and hiring you?
LASAN's 311 pickup is free, curbside, and takes a few days. It's the right choice for one couch with a curb and no rush. We're the choice when there's no curb, the building won't allow it, you need it gone today, or it's a whole apartment.
Do you take office furniture?
Yes: desks, chairs, filing cabinets, cubicle panels and conference tables. Larger office jobs are on our commercial junk removal page, but a few desks come out with a regular furniture pickup.
What if the furniture has bedbugs or is water damaged?
Tell us when you text. We bag it, keep it separate from donation items, and take it straight to the transfer station. It can't be donated, but we still handle it the same day.
