Why construction debris in Manhattan Beach is its own job
Manhattan Beach is 67.3 percent owner-occupied, and the owners keep building. That produces two very different kinds of debris job inside one city. In the Sand Section, the front door often sits on a walk street with no vehicle access at all, so a gutted kitchen has to travel by hand from the house to wherever a truck can legally stop. In the Hill Section, the opposite is true: the truck can reach the driveway, but the street is steep, the neighbors are close, and a teardown puts out loads that are heavy and bulky well beyond what a household program is built for.
The city's hauler, WM, runs a free bulky program built for furniture and appliances at the curb (details below). A stack of wet plaster or a pallet of old tile does not behave like a couch, and that gap is where a contractor's cleanup, or a call to us, comes in.
One more local wrinkle: since 2010, new builds in the city cannot exceed two merged lots. A rebuild on a double lot can mean a lot of material, so we plan teardown debris as a multi-day project rather than a single pickup.
What comes out of Manhattan Beach remodels
The mix changes by section. This is what we see most, and what we take under our debris removal service.
| Where | Typical debris | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sand Section walk streets | Kitchen and bath gut-outs: cabinets, tile, drywall, old fixtures | Hand-carried to the nearest cross street; loads are staged in small trips |
| Hill Section teardowns | Lumber, plaster and lath, roofing offcuts, flooring, windows and doors | Heavy, mixed loads; the lot is often active with other trades |
| The Strand | Interior remodel debris from oceanfront homes, old built-ins | No vehicle access; timing is set by the street and the neighbors |
| Tree Section | Flooring, carpet and padding, trim, a replaced deck or door set | Smaller, single-day loads |
| East Manhattan Beach | Condo and townhome renovations in Manhattan Village and Liberty Village | Elevator or loading-area rules from the association |
We do not take asbestos, lead paint chips, fire ash or hazardous liquids, and we do not do the demolition. If your contractor finds a suspect material behind a wall, stop the work and have it tested before anyone bags it. We haul what the crew has already broken out.
How we run a debris job here
Access decides everything in this city, so we start there. When you text a photo, send one of the pile and one of the route from the pile to the nearest place a truck can stop. For a Sand Section job, that second photo tells us how many cross-street trips the crew will make and whether we need to bring a second pair of hands for the stretch of walk street.
- Walk streets and the Strand. We stage the truck on the nearest cross street and hand-carry in. Parking in the Sand Section is scarce, so we arrive early and keep the truck short-stay.
- Hill Section. We coordinate around the other trades. A framer, a plumber and a haul-away crew in the same narrow driveway is how people get blocked in, so we ask for a window and show up inside it.
- Contractor sites. We can work from a pile the crew has already staged, or come back on a second day for the next phase. Photos of each stage get you a price for each stage.
- Condos. We ask for the building's move or contractor rules before we book, because elevator padding and loading-area hours vary by association.
We use no subcontractors and carry general liability and commercial auto insurance. We work Sundays too, which helps when the framers own the weekdays. Read how pricing works for how truck space is measured.
Where Manhattan Beach debris goes from here
Clean, separable material is worth the sorting. Metal gets pulled for recycling where we can.
The rest travels to a transfer station. The closest listed option for South Bay loads is the Republic Services / American Waste Transfer Station at 1449 W Rosecrans Ave in Gardena. We have not confirmed that site's current intake rules for construction debris, so we call ahead on larger loads. Hazardous household items such as paint, solvents and fuel are not ours to haul; the nearest drop-off is the Hyperion S.A.F.E. Center at 7660 W Imperial Hwy in Playa del Rey, which handles household hazardous waste and e-waste (weekend hours per LASAN; check before you go). For other materials, see our Manhattan Beach page.
What the city's bulky program covers, and where it stops
Use the free program first when it fits. If you are replacing one dishwasher and a couch and can wait for your collection day, booking WM costs you nothing. The city's Winter 2025 newsletter lists up to 6 free bulky pickups a year for single-family and multifamily residents.
It stops being the right tool in three situations. First, volume: a renovation easily produces more than a few items, and third-party sites describe a limit of 3 items per visit. Second, weight and size: those same sites cite 8 by 4 feet and 150 pounds per item, which rules out slabs of tile, bundled lumber and bathtubs. Third, access: a program built around the curb does not help a house on a walk street where there is no curb to reach. Third-party sites also say each visit needs 48 hours' notice, and we have not confirmed the per-item limits with the city, so check with WM before you rely on them. If the program doesn't cover it, send us a photo.
A typical Hill Section remodel call
This is the kind of job we expect to feature here, described as typical rather than as a customer story. A homeowner is partway through a kitchen and primary-bath remodel on a Hill Section street. The contractor's crew has piled drywall, a tub, old cabinet boxes and a bundle of lumber against the garage wall. The owner texts two photos on Monday morning. Miles replies with a clear price based on truck space, and the crew arrives on the next available morning inside the window the contractor gave. Two people load for about an hour, sweep the garage floor, and text a photo of the clean space. Any cabinet doors worth saving go to donation.

Debris Removal in Manhattan Beach: questions
How fast can you do construction debris removal in Manhattan Beach?
Sometimes the same day or the next when you text a photo before noon, depending on our schedule. Large Hill Section teardown loads and Sand Section walk-street jobs take more planning, so we confirm the access route and the time window first. Miles replies with a clear price based on truck space.
Can you haul construction debris from a Sand Section walk street?
Yes. Walk streets have no vehicle access to the front door, so we stage the truck on the nearest cross street and hand-carry the debris out. Send a photo of the route as well as the pile so we can plan the number of trips.
Does WM's free bulky pickup in Manhattan Beach take remodel debris?
The city's newsletter lists up to 6 free bulky pickups a year, but the program is aimed at furniture and appliances. Third-party sites report limits of 3 items per visit and 150 pounds per item, which we have not confirmed with the city. Ask WM before you plan a renovation around it.
Do you take demolition debris after a Manhattan Beach teardown?
We take the material once your demolition crew has broken it out: lumber, drywall, plaster, tile, roofing offcuts and small concrete loads. We do not do the demolition itself, and we do not take asbestos, lead paint chips or fire ash. Have anything suspect tested first.
Can you work alongside my Manhattan Beach contractor?
Yes. We can haul from a pile the crew has staged, or return in phases as the job moves from demolition to finish work. Tell us the contractor's schedule so we do not arrive in a narrow Hill Section driveway when another trade is loading in.
What happens to construction debris after you pick it up in Manhattan Beach?
Cabinets, doors and fixtures in good shape may go to Goodwill Southern California or The Salvation Army, which decide what they take. Metal is recycled where possible, and the remainder goes to a South Bay transfer station. We do not haul paint, solvents or other hazardous household waste.
Do you offer dumpsters for a Manhattan Beach remodel?
No. We do not rent dumpsters. We haul debris with our own truck and crew, which is often easier on a street where a container would block a driveway or need a permit. For ongoing demolition volume, your contractor may still want a bin.
