Estate Cleanout Santa Monica

We clear whole Santa Monica houses, from the large lots North of Montana to Sunset Park bungalows, with patience for the sorting. The family sets aside what stays, we donate what can be used, haul the rest and leave the house broom-clean. Text photos to (310) 905-5138 for one clear price.

Why estate cleanouts in Santa Monica are their own job

Most of Santa Monica rents, but the owner-occupied homes sit on some of the most valuable lots on the Westside. North of Montana and Sunset Park have single-family houses on large parcels, and many have stayed in one family for decades. When the owner dies or moves to assisted living, the family inherits a kitchen, closets, a garage and perhaps an attic or back house. Often the heirs live in Seattle or Phoenix and have a weekend, not a month.

That is a project, not a pickup, and the city's program is not built for it. It allows three free bulky-item pickups a year of up to five items each, and crews do not enter private property. Past the allowance the rate is $429.55 an hour (City of Santa Monica, effective July 1, 2026). A whole house needs a crew that comes inside.

What we see most

The mix reflects a long life in one place: furniture in every room, boxes of linens and kitchenware, books, records, framed art, tools in the garage and filing cabinets. Houses North of Montana often add formal dining sets, armoires and patio furniture. Sunset Park bungalows tend to be smaller but dense, with garages that have become storage.

  • Furniture and rugs: usually the largest share by volume, and the most likely to be donated.
  • Kitchens and closets: dishes, pots, clothing and linens, sorted for Goodwill Southern California or The Salvation Army.
  • Paperwork: tax records, statements and files, which we can bag separately; ask us about shredding.
  • Garage and yard: tools, shelving, bikes, patio sets and old appliances.

Some things we leave alone. We do not take vehicles, firearms or ammunition, and we do not take prescription medications; we will point you to a take-back site. Paint, solvents and other garage chemicals are hazardous waste we do not haul. Santa Monica residents can book free door-to-door hazardous waste pickup from CleanEarth at (877) 443-2371, because the City Yards at 2500 Michigan Avenue has no resident drop-off.

How we run it here

We start with photos. For a full house, ask whether a short walk-through makes sense, because photos hide the second refrigerator in the garage. Miles gives one price based on truck space for the whole job, so no meter runs while the family decides about a piano bench.

The crew works room by room. Before we load, the family marks what stays; ask us about using removable tape so nothing is taken by mistake. How long a house takes depends on what is in it, and Miles will give you a realistic estimate with the quote rather than a rule of thumb. Many North of Montana properties have long driveways and mature landscaping, and some blocks restrict parking, so we confirm where the truck sits before the first day. We do not need the family present throughout, but we do want a decision-maker reachable by phone.

We also move at the pace the family needs. If a daughter wants to open every drawer, we wait.

Where it goes from Santa Monica

Sorting decides the route. Metal and electronics are sent to recycling where we can. The remainder goes to Southern California Disposal and Recycling at 1908 Frank Street.

Paper takes more care. Ask us about bagging it separately and about shredding, and tell us at the start if anyone wants to go through it first. If we come across loose cash, jewelry or photographs, tell us in advance how you want those handled, and we will follow it. Ask us how we handle found items so there are no surprises.

The city program's limits for estate cleanouts

Use the city program for what it is good at: a few leftover items after the main clearout is done. Residents book through 311 at (866) 311-7266 or 311.santamonica.gov/csp, with items at the curb or the alley spot marked for city pickup. Crews will not go into the garage or the house to get them, and the wait is typically seven to ten days.

For an estate the sticking point is not only the five-item cap. It is that heirs rarely have days to spare, and a pre-sale refresh often generates construction debris and hazardous waste, which the city program excludes. A rented dumpster in the driveway is a different service entirely, and we do not offer dumpster rental. We bring the crew and the truck and load by hand.

A typical estate cleanout in Santa Monica

This is the kind of job we expect to document with real photos; it is an example, not a customer story. A daughter in Seattle texts photos of her parents' North of Montana house: a garage full of boxes and a dining set under plastic. Miles sends a price for the full job and offers a start window. The family marks keepsakes, the crew packs donations for Goodwill, carries out the rest and sweeps.

Estate Cleanout in Santa Monica: questions

How much of a Santa Monica house can you clear in one day for an estate cleanout?

It depends on what is in the house and how long the garage and any attic have been filling. Miles quotes the whole estate cleanout in Santa Monica from photos or a walk-through and gives you a realistic time estimate with the price.

Can the City of Santa Monica clear a whole house for an estate cleanout?

No. The city's bulky-item program covers three pickups a year, up to five items each, and city crews do not enter private property. After the allowance, the city charges $429.55 per hour (as of July 1, 2026), which is why whole houses need a hauler.

What happens to the items from a Santa Monica estate cleanout?

Metal and electronics are recycled where we can. The rest goes to Southern California Disposal and Recycling on Frank Street.

Can we keep some things during an estate cleanout in North of Montana?

Yes. Before we load, the family marks what stays, and we will wait while you open drawers and make decisions. Tell us at the start how you want us to handle any loose cash, jewelry or photos we come across, and ask us how we handle them.

What do you do with paperwork in a Santa Monica estate cleanout?

Tell us what is there and ask us about shredding. We can bag files and statements separately from the rest of the load. We do not read them, and you can tell us ahead of time if you want to review the paperwork first.

What can't you take in a Santa Monica estate cleanout?

We do not take vehicles, firearms, ammunition, prescription medications, or hazardous waste such as paint and solvents. Santa Monica residents can book free door-to-door hazardous waste pickup from CleanEarth at (877) 443-2371.

Do I need to be in Santa Monica for the estate cleanout?

No. Many families live out of state. We work from photos, confirm the plan by text, and need only someone reachable by phone.
